Why these numbers
The number everyone quotes for a LinkedIn banner is 1584 × 396, and it is correct. It is also close to useless on its own, because a large part of that rectangle is covered or cropped in normal use.
Your profile photo sits over the lower-left corner of the banner on desktop, occupying a circle roughly 200 pixels across with its own padding around it. Anything you place there is hidden behind your own face. On mobile the banner is cropped more aggressively still — the display is narrower relative to its height, so the left and right edges are trimmed, and how much depends on the device.
The practical consequence is that the reliably visible area is roughly the central band: about 1100 pixels wide and the full height, shifted right of centre to clear the profile photo. Any text, logo or focal point belongs there.
